The Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, welcomes the South African National Taxi Council’s (Santaco) introduction of the cashless smart card payment system in minibus taxis.
In further enhancement of SANTACO’s Operation Hlokomela, the usage of this system will enhance road safety as drivers will not focus on collecting fares whilst in transit. The fitted scanner with the Global Positioning System (GPS) will help in monitoring speed and location.
This progressive and ground breaking development is one of the important milestones in the modernisation of the taxi industry in South Africa.
Piloted in Pietermaritzburg in 2015, the initiative will not only revolutionarise the taxi fare payment system, but will also contribute towards enabling commuters to conduct other financial affairs, such as buying groceries at selected retail outlets.
The system will also assist taxi owners to access finance and bring taxi drivers into the formal economy. The initiative will ensure that taxi owners manage their business efficiently and effectively.
Once fully implemented and operational, the system will benefit more than two hundred thousand (200 000) taxis operating in South Africa, with about 15 million passengers every day, generating more than R90million a year in fares.
